Classic, Custom & Bespoke
At RSF we use these three classifications because they do a great job of showing where costs & design best align for a new project.
Classic, Custom & Bespoke demand quality work and the differences lie across a vast scope of detail, design and more.
Hickory Dining Table
A straightforward design, standard in scale, square profile legs and edges throughout. The natural grain of the Hickory carries the table visually. The leg joinery is done with through wedged mortise and tenon joints as a subtle added feature. That additional design and by hand joinery is enough to bring this build towards a Custom classification, but given its over all style and simplicity — we define it as a Classic.

Maple & Walnut Dining Table
A modular dining table made with a Maple top split in 3 removable panels. The panels when removed reveal a Walnut outer top with a matching Walnut recessed game vault below. This build was inspired by D&D game tables and was specifically designed and built for this modular purpose of dining and gaming. These design elements and build requirements represent truly Custom work.

A Storied Dining Table
The faded and chipped green substrate beneath the glass top - is an old architectural door that was found at a salvage store in downtown San Diego. Our client wanted a dining table yet there was no design, no proportions, no style - we were simply inspiration shopping and happened to come across this beautiful old door, and it was presented as an option, “this is your table.”
Reclaimed Pine for the outer frame, salvaged steel welded and Lacquer finished for the legs. The door itself could not hold the glass flat given its condition, so hand carved copper painted inlays were made to go around the edges in order to seat the glass and it lays flush with the outer Pine band.
The level of attention to material choice, design and distinction reflect the work of a Bespoke piece.

Maple & Walnut Dining / Gaming Table $5,600-
A modular dining table made with a Maple top split in 3 removable panels. The easily removable panels reveal a walnut outer top with a matching walnut recessed game vault below. This build was inspired by D&D game tables and was specifically designed and built for this modular purpose of dining and gaming. These design elements and build requirements represent truly Custom work.
Storied Dining Table $7,200-
The faded and chipped green substrate beneath the glass top - is an old architectural door that was found at a salvage store in downtown San Diego. Our client wanted a dining table yet there was no design, no proportions, no style - we were simply inspiration shopping and happened to come across this beautiful old door, and it was presented as an option, “this is your table.”

Reclaimed Pine Seating Bench - Custom
$3,200Hickory Dining Table -$3,500
-
A straightforward design, standard in scale, square profile legs and edges throughout. The natural grain of the Hickory carries the table visually. The leg joinery is done with through wedged mortise and tenon joints as a subtle added feature. That additional design and hand work is enough to bring this build towards a Custom classification, but given its over all style - we define it as Classic.
-
The details which this bench apart are the reclaimed pine material, the mitered waterfall edges and the contrasting white oak dovetails. All of which make this a truly custom piece.
White Oak Coffee Table $2,800-
Traditional in design, the proportions of each part that make the table were carefully chosen. This gives the piece its striking balance and resolved look. Quartersawn White Oak with small touches of detail throughout. This is the understated Classic.
Maple Shelf with Walnut features - Custom$1,600-
Inspired by “sashimono” the Japanese joinery method of joining pieces together without nails, screws or glue.
The outer vertical pieces are each two separate boards that stand alone. They structurally behave as one because of the sashimono joinery.
A single Walnut interlocking piece at each shelf end joins the shelf and both vertical boards all together.
What looks like a simple Maple shelf unit becomes a puzzle when looked at closely to find how it has stability.
Matching Walnut Vanity Cabinets $6,800-
One of two matching Walnut vanity cabinets. The inset style face frame construction blends the traditional and modern looks together. To accentuate this aesthetic RSF designed the legs to be the frame rather than separate. The slight taper allows the vanity to visually present itself, a true stand alone cabinet piece. The design and involved joinery make this a Custom piece.
Reclaimed Wood & White Oak Desk $6,500-
The desk cabinet is made of Quarter Sawn White Oak hardwood to match the frame and legs. The drawer fronts are Reclaimed Barnwood to match the top.
The top is made of 3 pieces seamed together and treated with epoxy resin for stability.
The frame uses mortise and tenon joinery at the apex to join the leg and rail together. Perpendicular supports span the bottom of the top and have recessed sliding dovetail ends that marry with the frame at both the front and back.
The full hardwood panels of the cabinet, epoxy treatment to stabilize reclaimed barn wood, angled mortise and tenon joinery, recessed dovetails to support the top and floating frame.
This build is an exercise in ingenuity supported by years of experience to make a one of a kind Bespoke build.

What shapes the final price?
The figures above offer a helpful reference point, but each RSF piece is priced around its specific design and requirements. The biggest factors are the current lumber market and material selection, the overall scale and scope of the piece, and the level of fabrication required to bring the design to life.
-
The species you choose affects both the character and cost of a piece. Maple is a durable, more economical hardwood; white oak offers a balanced, elevated option with distinctive grain; and walnut is a premium choice valued for its rich tone and natural variation.
-
Pricing reflects both proportions of the work and the scope of design.
Larger or more substantial pieces require more material and build time, while added design details, integrated features, and more involved methods of fabrication increase the scope of the build.
-
Clean, straightforward forms are often the most efficient to fabricate, and therefore have lower costs.
More involved joinery, integrated storage, complex bases, curved or sculptural elements, specific hand done work, and one-of-one design details require additional development and shop time.
