Sizing your Dining Room Table

Plan for 24-28" of table space per person, and at least 36" from the table edge to a wall (42"–48" where people walk behind chairs).

  • 4–6 seats: about 38" wide, 66" long

  • 6–8 seats: about 40" wide, 84" long

  • 8–10 seats: about 42" wide, 102" long

Every table is built to the room, so these are starting points.

Material:

Hardwoods we often use to build dining room tables

sourced from local yards in San Diego.

  • Walnut: deep brown sometimes with subtle purple, stable, and the most requested. Also the highest cost per board foot.

  • White oak: hard, straight-grained, and resistant to moisture. Quartersawn boards show ray fleck.

  • Hickory: the hardest of the group, with strong contrast between light and dark wood. Tough to work, tougher against high use.

  • Sugar maple: hard, light colored, and tight-grained. Handles daily wear well and warms in tone over time.

  • Cherry: smooth, even grain that darkens noticeably over its first year in the light.

Pricing

Dining tables run from $3,000 to $12,000. Where a table lands depends on size, wood, and design level.

  • Classic: traditional designs built to your dimensions.
